There are three international bookstores which can be found in Tripoli.  While stores in the past have stocked mostly educational reading pertaining to learning English or books on Libya, a new book store has opened which stocks a greater variety of books and will order specific books in store.  While this is a huge step forward for Libya, it is still the only store in Tripoli of its kind.

Before you go:

It is wise to bring an extensive selection of your own books, as choice of new reading material will be limited once in Libya.  Expats usually lend and borrow books from each other, and magazines or newspapers find their way around town going from family to family.

Religious reading material (other than on Islam) cannot be found in Tripoli, however there are no laws against you bringing in religious literature for your own personal study.

Al Resala 1

Where: Dahra, An'nasr Street, from town towards Zawiyat Dahmani, turn right to Bakeer Street, the last street on your right just before the main traffic light at the corner of Dahra Market.

What you’ll find: Al Resala 1 stocks mainly architecture and design related English books.

Al Resala 2

What you’ll find: The newest English book shop to open in Tripoli is the Al Resalah 2 Bookshop.  This store is stocked with English books and unlike other international bookstores in town, it boasts a varied selection of English reading, including cooking books, (Jamie Oliver and the Aussie Women’s Weekly among them), current and modern fiction, classic fiction, design, DIY and architecture. The store will also order specific books into the store for customers. 

Where: Hai Al Andalus on the same road as the French School.   The road runs between Gargaresh and Gorgi.  Coming from Gargaresh it can be found on your right hand side.  The store is not marked with external signage and is a small single glass fronted store with the brickwork rendered in white.

Open: Daily (except Friday) from 09.00 to 21.00.

Fergiani Book Stores (First September Street)

What you’ll find: The Fergiani book stores offer a small section of travel, language and general fiction and non-fiction books in English print.  The selection is small, however it will keep you going until your next trip home.

Fergiani Book Stores (Hai Al Andalus)

What you’ll find: The Fergiani book stores offer a small section of travel, language and general fiction and non-fiction books in English print.  The selection is small, however it will keep you going until your next trip home. Where: On Gargaresh Road in the same strip of shops as Caracalla and Guess, in Hai Al-Andalus
